Measurement and Action

APPLIED CLIMATE ACCOUNTING AS A STRATEGIC PREREQUISITE FOR THE PATH TO CLIMATE NEUTRALITY IN TOURISM DESTINATIONS

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE PROJECT?

Together with Munich University of Applied Sciences, we are developing an evidence-based procedure for a comprehensive survey of tourism-specific greenhouse gas emissions in the three tourism destinations of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (state level). Berlin (metropolitan level) and Northern Black Forest (regional level). In this way, a clear assessment basis for a strategic climate protection management for tourism is to be created and, based on this, fields of action with the greatest greenhouse gas reduction potentials are to be identified, which can significantly reduce the consumption of resources and materials by tourism.

What methods are used?

  • Application of two methods in different types of destinations (country, metropolitan, regional)
  • Bottom-up: Use of tourism activity data and corresponding emission factors of tourism segments.
  • Top-down: Determination of emissions by economic sector using extended environmental economic input-output analysis (EEIO). This enables e.g. emissions linkages of the industry and all types of emissions are mapped
